So, let your imagination run wild, experiment with different hues, and create a blanket that screams YOU.
My go-to is always warm tons, but let me tell you, this blanket gives me pure fall vibes and I’m all for it!
Crochet on the go
This blanket is the perfect on-the-go project to bring with you anywhere. Going to the park? waiting at the doctor’s office? Yup, you can bring this blanket with you. Because we make one square at a time, it is so easy to take this blanket with you. Simply bring one skein of yarn, your crochet hook, scissors and a tapestry needle and work your squares away!
Once you’re done making all your squares, it’s time to assemble!
Why Chenille yarn?
Okay, so here is the thing, you can make a blanket with whatever material you’d like, but let’s be honest, if you have ever touched chenille yarn you already know why we are using it.
This yarn is ridiculously soft and oh, so warm, making it perfect for a blanket and all things snuggly.
This yarn doesn’t have to make your project super heavy and warm. If this is your first time with one of my blankets, let me tell you, I love a good drapey and flowy blanket. I don’t like heavy things and that can easily change if you use the correct tools. That is why my patterns are made using bigger sizes of hooks; to achieve that look.
So yes, you can have a nice and warm blanket, while at the same time being light and soft 🙂
Now, I know chenille yarn can get pricey, but hey! You can get coupons pretty much anywhere, so take advantage! Wait for a sale or buy one skein at a time to get a good deal 🙂
Joining the squares
This is a very sensitive topic for lots of people. Joining the squares is the no-fun part of making a “granny squares blanket”, I know it, I get it, I feel you.
But, think about this, you worked so hard crocheting each square, you can’t give up now!
Now, here’s the thing, there are multiple ways to join the squares, some easier and faster than others, but all of this will depend on the colours you’re using for your squares.
For example, if the last round of each square is the same colour, it will be 10x easier to assemble because you don’t have to worry about the yarn showing on the back because it’s the same colour.
In my case, I decided to make every square different colours, and because of that, I have to find a way to join the squares in a more “invisible” way.
The way I joined my squares definitely takes longer, but like I said, you cannot see the yarn and it looks very neat.
If you are making all your squares in one solid colour, you can use the slip stitch method or the whip stitch method.
Beginner friendly?
Absolutely yes, you can practice one square at a time. This square was made thinking of all of my crochet newbies <3
All you need to know to crochet each square is double crochet and chains. For the border, I used single crochet, easy peasy!
You also have the full video tutorial where I show you exactly how to make the squares and how to join them together.

Joining the squares
Once you are all done making the squares (please see above for the number of squares needed per colour), it is time to join them. I used the invisible join because my squares are all different colours, but feel free to use your preferred joining method.
I joined them per row, so I attached rows 1 and 2, then I attached row 3 and so on.
Once all rows were attached, I joined the columns. For this joining method, you don’t need to worry about the colour, because you won’t be able to see it.
Though, I recommend using the same colour as your border to make it even more seamless.
Making the border
For the border, we will make a very simple stitch. Single crochet all the way around.
Round 1: Insert your hook in any stitch on the edge of your blanket. Make a slip knot with your border colour, bring up a loop, ch 1 to secure, then sc in the same space. Now continue with sc all the way around. For the corners work [2 sc, 2 ch, 2 sc]. Repeat all the way around. Join the round with a ss and ch 1.
Round 2: Sc all the way around. For the corners work [2 sc, 2 ch, 2 sc]. Repeat all the way around. Join the round with invisible join or ss and fasten off.

Did you block your squares before joining?
danijaimalis says
I did not 🙂

Hello, I am looking to make this in the same colours as you have done – they match my living room perfectly. Where do you buy the yarn from as i can’t find red rust anywhere?
danijaimalis says
I bought mine at Michaels but you can also find them at Walmart or Amazon
Lori Mercer says
Are you blocking the squares to get them to 8×8?
danijaimalis says
Nope, I do not block blanket yarn 🙂

This is beautiful! I had a quick question about the blue color used. It says it’s Seafoam, but I’m finding that Bernat only makes the Seafoam color for the Bernat Baby Blanket line. On one of the instagram videos (this one: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cub8DO-LC1o/), the label on the blue yarn ball seems to be the normal Bernat Blanket brand instead of the Baby Blanket. So I was wondering if it was by chance either the Rosemary, Mint Green, Frosted Blue, Gray Blue, or some other color? I was really hoping to make mine in the same colors you used because this is absolutely gorgeous! I was able to find all the other colors specified and I can’t wait to get started! Thanks so much for the beautiful and helpful pattern!
