Stunning cloud blanket – Free crochet pattern

After posting the movie night throw, I knew I needed to make more blankets. So then I created Andrea’s blanket and Dani’s blanket, which were easy patterns as well, but I have to say, this one might be my favourite so far.

To get started on your own chunky blanket, all you need is chenille yarn and your crochet hook. The pattern is simple and easy to follow, with clear instructions and helpful tips along the way. And if you need a little extra guidance or if you are a more visual person, there’s even a video tutorial available to walk you through the process step by step.

The finished blanket is a generous size, perfect for draping over the back of your sofa or adding a cozy layer to your bedding. The soft and plush texture of the yarn makes it ideal for snuggling up under on chilly nights, while the beautiful coloured dots add a pop of colour to your home decor.

If you have been following me, you already know that I really like neutrals and mustard and I don’t tend to go for a lot of colours. But I knew I needed to change that, and after crocheting the Primavera Blanket I fell in love with colours again.

The good thing is, this blanket it’s not filled with colours. The subtle dots throughout the blanket gives it that pop of colour that I was looking for, while also keeping it somewhat neutral.

To make this blanket I used Chenille-type yarn. Bernat blanket to be specific, but I know there are a lot of different brands out there that have this type of yarn. Just make sure is category 6, super bulky weight.

Yarn

For this blanket and this size, I used 1,530g for colour A and 750g for colour B of Bernat Blanket yarn. You can use any chenille-type yarn.

For colour A I used Birch.

For colour B I used Sailors Delight.

You could also use a classic super bulky weight yarn like Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick.

Why Chenille yarn?

This yarn has been my favourite for the past year to make chunky blankets for two simple reasons: One, it is incredibly soft, and two, it will last forever.

That’s right, chenille yarn is one of those types of fibres that will last for a very long time, it won’t pill and it will hold its shape. It is also very soft and when choosing a bulky size, you will be able to make blankets as quick as 4 hours.

Notions

• Size 8 mm crochet hook
• Scissors
• Tapestry needle

Gauge

Pattern stitch 4″x4″ = 9 sts x 5 rows

Abbreviations

• Ch(s) – Chain(s)
• Sc – Single Crochet
• Dc – Double Crochet
• St(es) – Stitch(es)

Pattern

Begin with your foundation chain. Every odd row will be with colour A and every even row with colour B.

Note: The ch 3 at the beginning of each odd number row counts as one dc.

Ch 128 sts

Row 1: In the fifth chain from the hook, work a dc, then dc all the way across your chain. (125)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in the first sts available, then [ch 2, skip 3 sts, sc in the space between the stitches]. Repeat across the row. (125)

Row 3: Ch 3, [3 dc in the ch 2 space from the previous row]. Repeat until 1 st left. Dc in the last st. (125)

Alternate rows 2 and 3 for a total of 91 rows (90 + the setup row).

You should end your blanket with a row of colour A.

Making the border

Depending on the colour that you want to use for your border, switch to colour B or stay with colour A.

3 sc in the first sts (to create a corner), then sc all around your blanket. On the sides of your blanket, work 3 sc per each colour A row and 1 sc per each colour B row. You should have approximately 620 sts around. To finish, slip stitch with the first st created, fasten off and weave in your ends.

Note: Work 3 sc in each corner of your blanket.

Final measurements 56″ x 66″

And now you’re done! As simple as that, now you can make blankets for the whole family! I can’t wait to see the colours that you guys will choose!
