That’s why I have created a list with my top 10 free crochet patterns to try if you are a beginner.
Before showing you the options, I want to tell you what to look for on a pattern so you know you can make it with no problem as a beginner.
Difficulty
You need to find patterns that are categorized as “easy” or “beginner-friendly”. As a designer, that is the way we tell our readers that this pattern is easy enough for a beginner to make.
Size of your project
When you are just starting, you can’t jump into a huge project, I mean, you can, but you are most likely to quit and not finish your project.
I always recommend starting with a project that is quick enough for you to finish in less than a week. Even better, if you can finish it within one day or one weekend.
The quickest the project, the most rewarding the feeling. This equals you getting extra EXCITED and most likely wanting to crochet again.
Pattern stitch
This is super important. As a beginner, you want to choose a pattern that has fewer stitches. If it has only one stitch, even better!.
You will want to practice one stitch at a time as much as possible. That means that if you find a project that is quick but has a lot of different stitches, it might not be suitable for you.
You need to practice not just the stitch, but also the number of stitches (not losing a stitch or crocheting an extra one on the way), and your tension, this is crucial to have a good stitch definition, and even more so if you are crocheting a garment down the road.
The yarn size matters
Yes, in this case, the size matters you guys! As a beginner, you don’t want to choose a pattern that uses very thin yarn, stay away from fingering weight or DK. Worsted weight is okay, but I would highly recommend using either bulky or super bulky to start.
This also goes for your crochet hook, the smaller the hook, the harder is going to be to crochet and see the stitches.
The only exemption to this rule would be for dishcloths, most cotton yarns are worsted weight, and that is what you need in order to make dishcloths.
