Ok, you guys! Today’s tutorial is something different but very exciting! I will show you how to personalize a blanket or any knitting project with the duplicate stitch technique.
This is one of my most requested videos/patterns, and also one of my best sellers. I love making these blankets, because I know they go somewhere special, to snuggle a little baby 🙂
Not ready to make it yet? Pin this image to Pinterest, and do it later!
With this technique, you can write whatever you want on pretty much any knitting project. From blankets to sweaters, or even hats!
You don’t have to write names, you can also make shapes, colorwork, etc. The options are endless.

Materials
- You will need your finished blanket ( Click HERE for the blanket tutorial)
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
- The same yarn that you used to make the blanket, in a contrasting colour.
How to do it:
First
You need a grid to write the name on it. I have two options for you, the first one is a free grid that I made that you can download for free and print.
Once you have downloaded the grid, you can print it in letter size and make sure to delete the border in your printer settings
The second option is to use a free online tool, a website called Stitch Fiddle, in here you can make a bunch of different patterns. It is the website I currently use to make the names of my blankets.
Once you are on the website go ahead and click Crochet > Crochet with colours > No preference > Empty chart (own design). Then add 53 columns and 30 rows and click Create chart.
Here you can use whatever colour you want and start painting the little squares to write the name.
Second
Now you need to create your own letters or find one to write the name. I like using Pinterest because it has a bunch of different options. I will link a board I have created with all of my favourite letters.
Now that you have your letters, start writing the name on your grid!
Third
Using the duplicate stitch, begin embroidering the name on your blanket.

And that’s it, that’s how you can write names, shapes, or whatever you want on your blankets!
I hope this post was helpful! Don’t forget to share your blanket on IG, find me as @cj.dsgn
