In today’s blog, I will teach you how to crochet this beautiful sleep bag step by step.
This is the perfect baby shower gift, and you can customize it however you’d like.
I find this baby cocoon to be super cute when placed in strollers/bassinet, to keep your baby extra warm at all times.
The good thing about it is that you can adjust the length to make it the perfect size for your baby.
I would suggest finding the baby’s length and crocheting the bag a few inches longer, so the baby has room to grow with it.
Pin now, crochet later!
The width is also customizable. To make a wider sleeping bag all you need to do is increase the number of chains in your foundation chain at the very beginning.
This sleeping bag was made for my little niece. She was 1 month old in the picture below and you can see, she had a lot of room to continue growing and using the sleeping bag.

Please note: Buttons are a choking hazard when they’re loose. Please make sure to sew them really well so the baby won’t have any chance of pulling them off. If buttons make you nervous, please feel free to replace them with velcro, snaps, or whatever you prefer. If you don’t want anything at all, you can always just sew both sides.

Pattern
Start with an even number of chains. I chained 40 for this Cocoon
Row 1: Single crochet in the 4th chain from the hook
Then double crochet one, single crochet one, double crochet, single crochet… Repeat this sequence until the row is completed
Note: The last stitch of EVERY row must be a single crochet
Row 2: Chain 3 (this will be the first double crochet), turn your work, and then single crochet in the next space available. Then continue with double crochet, single crochet, double crochet, etc.. until the row is completed.
If you want to make this cocoon with one colour, repeat row number 2 until you reach 124 cm/49 inches.
If you want to change colours just crochet a few rows with each colour.
Make the border/edge
Continue with the same colour of your last row or the colour of your preference.
Row 1: Chain one, single crochet all the way around the cocoon (along both sides of the entire rectangle; the bottom and the hoodie). When you get to the two corners single crochet 3 in the same stitch to create a rounded corner (make sure to do this on every single row of the border)
Also when you start crocheting on the side make sure every single crochet goes on each of the past rows (one single crochet per row).
Row 2: Single crochet all around. Single crochet 3 together on each corner (right in the middle stitch of the three ones from the last row)
Row 3: In this row, we will create the buttonholes. Place the buttons where you will attach them later to have an idea of where they will go.
Use a few stitch markers to mark where the buttons will be and be able to make the buttonholes right in the same spot.
Now single crochet until you reach the first stitch marker, take it out and chain 2, skip two stitches and continue single crochet until reaching the next stitch marker.
Keep doing this all the way around until the row is completed.
Row 4: Single crochet until reaching the first buttonhole, single crochet two in the hole, then single crochet until reaching the next hole and do the same.
Keep doing this all the way around until the row is completed.
Row 5: Single crochet all the way around (don’t forget the three stitches on each corner)
Row 6: Slip stitch all the way around (this row is optional). In this row, you don’t have to slip-stitch three together on the corners.
Wave in the ends and your Baby Cocoon is done!
Final measurements
From the bottom to the top of the hood: 30 inches/76 cm
From the bottom to the edge (where the baby’s arms are): 18.8 inches/47 cm
From side to side (how wide it is, including border): 17.5 inches/44 cm
